หลายท่านที่มีโอกาสใช้ Microsoft Windows เป็น OS หลักไม่ว่าเพื่อกิจกรรมที่บ้าน หรือที่ทำงานอาจจะมีประสบการณ์ในการ download ซอฟต์แวร์ที่เป็นของฟรีจาก Microsoft มาบ้าง และมีอยู่หลายตัวที่มีประโยชน์อย่างยิ่งในการใช้งานประจำวัน ฉบับนี้มาดูฟรีซอฟต์แวร์สำหรับ Developer กันครับ
เมื่อพูดถึง developer ผมเชื่อว่าสิ่งที่เป็นเสมือนแขนขาของ developer ก็คงต้องเป็น IDE ทาง Microsoft ได้มี Microsoft Visual Studio ซึ่งในช่วงปลายปีที่ผ่านมาทาง Microsoft ก็ได้นำเสนอ Visual Studio 2008 กับ .NET Framework 3.5 ซึ่งเป็นรุ่นล่าสุด โดยสนับสนุนการทำงานที่หลากหลายความตัองการ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นระดับผู้ใช้งานเริ่มต้น ไปจนถึงระดับมืออาชีพที่ต้องการทำงานเป็นทีม และสนันสนุนการพัฒนาระบบงานไม่ว่าจะเป็นระบบงานที่ทำงานบน web ระบบงานที่ต้องการพัฒนาระบบงานบน Windows Vista ,2007 Office System หรือ Windows Server 2008 ที่กำลังจะออกมาในเร็ววันนี้ และก็รวมถึงความสามารถในการจัดการวงจรของการพัฒนา Software ( Application Life-cycle management , ALM )
สำหรับกลุ่มผุ้ใช้งานที่ยังไม่ต้องการพัฒนาระบบงานที่มีความซับซ้อนมากนัก Microsoft ก็ได้นำเสนอ Microsoft Visual Studio Express Edition ที่ได้มีการแจกจ่ายให้กับผุ้ใช้งานได้ฟรี
Visual Studio Express Edition อาจจะไม่ความสามารถในเรื่อง Source Code Control, Project Management , Test Case Management ,Database Refactoring, Mobile Device Support ซึ่งมีใน Visual Studio Team System แต่ความสามารถอื่น ๆ ที่มีใน Visual Studio Standard Edition หรือ Visual Studio Professional Edition อย่างเช่น IntelliSense, Code snippets ,XML Editor Support ก็ได้ถูกนำมาใส่ไว้ใน Visual Studio Express Edition

•SQL Server Express Edition และ SQL Server Compact Edition ซึ่งออกแบบให้ทำงานคู่กับ Visual Studio เป็นอย่างดี รวมถึงการสร้าง และนำ Stored Procedures หรือ functions ไปใช้งาน ซึ่งก็รวมถึงความสามารถอื่น ๆ ที่เราสามารถใช้ได้โดยตรงจาก Visual Studio Express

SQL Server Express ได้นำเสนอความสามารถต่างๆ ที่มีใช้งานที่ระบบฐานข้อมูลขนาดใหญ่มีให้ใช้งาน ซึ่งรวมถึงสนับสนุนคำสั่ง และ syntax ของ SQL Server T-SQL การพัฒนา stored procedures ด้วย Visual Basic หรือ Visual C# อีกทั้งความสามารถในการค้นหาในลักษณะ full text search
